There are some people who energize & light up a room when they walk into it, and Evita Arce is that person! Once you get a taste of her infectious happiness, you'll just want more. I've had the pleasure of being a dancer in her lindy hop company for years, of learning so much from her, and being able to call her a friend.
I'm so excited that she's sharing her perspective on being fit with us because she's an international Lindy Hop teacher and she's worked regularly as a dancer since 2006 in New York City. She's performed on many stages and choreographed numbers but her main work is teaching people how to dance together. She's currently engaged and working to balance her touring life with more regular work at "home".

How Do You Help People Stay Healthy?
I teach people how to social dance, specifically in Lindy Hop, which is Swing Dancing.
What Is The #1 Thing Someone Could Do TODAY To Feel Better In Their Body?
Smile. And even better if you smile at someone else.
What's Your Advice To Someone Who's Having Trouble Getting Started With That?
Take a breath. Open your eyes, look up to the sky. Notice what ever is above you. It helps you get outside of your inner fears. You usually find that you will take a breath in when you do this as well.
What Does A Typical Day Look Like For You And How Do You Fit Movement Into It?
I teach dance classes weekly. I also rehearse with my dance partners. I try to fit in some kind of movement activity just for me at least twice a week that's not about dance. So for me that would be a gentle jog in the park or a Yoga class.
What Other Practices Keep You Healthy? In Body And/Or In Mind?
I really enjoy knitting because it actually forces me to sit quietly, calmly, and in that time I still feel productive, forward movement toward my knitting project. I also find it a great way to focus and think about things going on in my life. Or if I'm making a gift for someone special, I focus on that person and send them good thoughts. It's like I put happy moments into each stitch. And that makes me happy, fills me with positive thoughts, and all the while I am resting and practicing calm. Which is something I need in my busy New York City lifestyle.
What Is Your JOYworkout?
*Elyse calls a "JOYworkout" a form of movement that is something more than a workout for workout's sake. It's exercise and it's ALSO something that: a) you just plain LOVE to do, b) builds your community, c) teaches you a new skill, d) enhances your spiritual life, e) helps you give back, f) gets you outdoors + is adventurous.
Number one is dancing. The shared experience of improvisation, playful, quick thinking and bouncing of energy between me and my partner, the music and the entire room fills me with happiness. I completely forget how physically active I am because my attention is on so many other exciting things. You can really get into a zone while social dancing where you let go of your worries. It can be very spiritual. I am always reminded that the art form requires more than just me alone and that is humbling.
If You "Fall Off The Wagon" With Your Health + Wellness, How Do Get Back Into It?
Slowly. Gently. And I write out a plan on my calendar.
Where Are You Getting Your Motivation From Right Now?
Music. New songs I listen to while jogging. And the Fall Season in NYC! It's the best time of year.
What Is A Motto Or Quote That You Live By?
This too shall pass. Meaning, if it's great, enjoy it because it will not last forever. And if it's bad, stay calm, it will also not last forever.
